no theatre show

i went to the theatre show that day
dressed up, with a hat in my hair
but when i got to the theatre show
the theatre show wasn't there

i thought i came at the certain time
i read on the newspaper page
but i wondered the forest for the trees
or the wrong historical age

i waited a little just in case
my clock was a little fast
but the beginning never seemed to come
i was either too first or too last

i had nothing in the world to do
my schedule was all amiss
so i remained there for a spell
in a kind of paralysis
